Maruni Nuvole is a handcrafted art piece designed by Italian designer Andrea Ponti, produced in a limited edition by Kyoto-based Kyo Karakami Maruni. “Nuvole,” meaning “clouds” in Italian, captures the density and energy of Southeast Asia’s summer storms. The creation process starts from the paper: local artisans craft a single sheet by gluing together multiple types of Japanese washi paper. Made from the inner bark of various local plants, the paper is carefully mixed with natural adhesives, pressed, and naturally dried. Skilled artisans at Maruni then carefully apply real silver foil to the washi paper, leaving the borders intentionally incomplete. Using a traditional karakami woodblock, they transfer a cloud pattern onto the silver foil with a natural mixture. Color is added using the “yakihaku” technique, where minerals are heated to change the foil’s color. Subtle temperature changes create unique shades, ensuring no two art pieces are the same. The woodblock pattern retains its silvery shine, resembling clouds floating. Finally, a transparent protective agent is applied to guard against moisture and oxidation. The result is a golden surface with varying brightness, reflecting cloud density in both color and pattern. Maruni Nuvole reimagines Japanese karakami technique while exploring new materials and aesthetics.

Produced in a limited edition, Maruni Nuvole is available for purchase.
